<p>The new <em><span style="text-decoration: underline">FH5000 series</span></em>&#8211; with a high-acceleration spindle, preload system, and high torque features- allows shops to conduct high-volume machining in a compact footprint.</p>
<p>JTEKT Toyoda Americas introduced the FH5000 series of three, high-speed horizontal machining centers (HMC), including the FH5000s HMC with 800x800x880 mm (X,Y,Z) strokes, 900 mm workpiece diameter, and 1100-mm workpiece height capacity. The FH5000 series machines include a 500-mm table capable of handling 1000 kg loads.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this series, Toyoda meets the growing demand for producing components with high metal removal rates, short cycle times, and superior surface finishes,&#8221; according to a JTEKT representative.</p>
<p> Toyoda&#8217;s FH5000s HMCs with 60-tool ATC capacity are designed for speed and production reliability, featuring a 15,000-RPM, 50-HP (37-kW), 303-Nm (223 ft/lbs.) high-acceleration spindle. The 40-taper spindle is designed with four ceramic bearings at eh front of the spindle to increase rigidity and reduce vibration. Its patented hydraulic preload system bring the spindle up to 15,000 RPM in less than one second without spindle warm-up, ideal for aluminum processing.</p>
<p>The larger machines in the FH5000 series are equipped with a 50-taper spindle, 45 tools, and a longer X axis travel.</p>
<p>The machines are equipped with a direct-drive B-axis table featuring an index time (90&#8242;) of 0.7 seconds.</p>
<p>TheFH5000 series &#8211; with the spindle design, preload system, and high torque features &#8211; allow machine shops to take advantage of more aggressive, high-volume machining in a compact footprint, according to the company. </p>
<p> Easily programmed, the FH5000 series features the TOYOPUC-Touch panel through which the operator can monitor the machine see operating data including energy consumption, and edit as required.</p></div>

Starting with the spindle, the 12,000 RPM speed isn&#8217;t the fastest but it does have the highest torque with 79.1 ft. lbs. with the next highest being the VM20i and VM30i at 60 ft. lbs. The key benefits of these CNC machining centers that feature an inline direct-drive spindle include faster chip to chip time, less heat resulting in better repeatability and improved surface finishes.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.hurco.com/Specifications/Pages/Machine-Data-Sheet.aspx?Model=VM15Di&amp;Company=HUS">VM15Di</a> also has the fastest rapids and programmable feed rate in the lineup. With a programmable feed rate of 1,417 ipm  and rapids in X &amp; Y of 1,417 and Z at 1,181 ipm.</p></div>

Over the years, they acquired several CNC milling machines, offering services for build-to-print precision machining and plastic injection tooling. Located in Macomb County, Michigan, they server the medical, defense, aerospace/space, and automotive industries in the greater United States.</p>
<p> With a team of employees boasting 130+ years of experience combined, Prosper-Tech&#8217;s expertise in CNC milling is top-notch. In 2020 they were approached with an opportunity for aerospace work needing complex parts machinated and would require a very rigid turn/mill center. Not one to turn a customer or a opportunity away they reached out to friend in the industry to find the best solution for the job as this part would be best suited for a high-quality multi-axis turn/mill.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>&#8220;This part would require a different type of machine than we were currently using, so I wanted to make sure we were thorough in our research so we could provide the expert customer service we state in our mission,&#8221; said Heidi. learning as much as they could about the part, Heidi and Bob started looking at the major-brand CNC turning providers: Mori, Doosan, Okuma, and Eurotech. The aerospace part in question was made of Inconel 625 and required both turning and milling.</p>
<p> Steve Skuras and Tim Cremeans from Merrifield Machine, their local Eurotech distributor, visited Prosper-Tech. The best solution for this part was Eurotech&#8217;s Forza TA model, designed for heavy-duty TURNING AND MILLING. Steve and Tim proceeded to take Heidi and Bob through a series of steps to introduce them to the advanced technology of Eurotech Forza and introduce them to the Eurotech and Merrifield Machinery Solutions teams.</p></div>

From the polished way covers to the aluminum lubrication lines and the scissor style way covers, no compromises or shortcuts were taken,&#8221; said Steve.</p>
<p>&#8220;The support they would receive would not only be from Merrifield, their local full service distrubutor, but it would also include Eurotech and their &#8216;Constant Care and Commitment&#8217; pledge. This is hard to explain to a first-time Eurotech buyer, so I invited Heidi and Bob to visit the Eurotech Tech Center in Florida,&#8221; said Steve.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are very much at ease when visiting the Eurotech Tech Center. Roy Selway, Vice President of Eurotech, gave us a presentation on the machine and introduced us to the team. Steve Skuras was so confident we would invest in the Eurotech Forza that he even had the team put a &#8216;SOLD to Prosper-Tech&#8217; sign on it. We thought that was a nice touch,&#8221; said Heidi.</p>
<p>Heidi and Bob met many of the Eurotech team members. Eurotech&#8217;s Nation Service Manager, Art Silva, gave them a technical presentation of the machine with the sheet metal removed to view the interior aspects in motion as Art pointed out the features. After Art&#8217;s presentation, Joe Selway, Eurotech&#8217;s CEO, gave them an overview of the company&#8217;s origin story and culture.</p>
<p>&#8220;After visiting the competitor machine manufacturers, Bob later told me that he and Heidi felt Eurotech&#8217;s culture best aligned with their own company culture. As a family-built company with a focus on the Gold Rule, Prosper-Tech and Eurotech had a lot in common,&#8221; Said Steve Skuras.</p>
<p>&#8220;We preformed a test cut by turning, drilling and milling Inconel 625 for Prosper-Tech&#8217;s customer at our Tech Center,&#8221; said Roy Selway. &#8220;After the sale, Merrifield and Eurotech made sure that each phase of the process, includeing the installtion, the training provided, to the part produdction was delivered on-site and to Prosper-Tech&#8217;s satisfaction. &#8220;I won&#8217;t say it was smooth sailing the entire delivery and installtion, but we don&#8217;t stop until expeactions are met or exceeded,&#8221; explained Roy.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner">At 33, Eric Medlen was a rising star in the NHRA drag racing circuit, winner of six tour events, eight times a number one qualifier, he was a media favorite for his running commentary, and a fan favorite for both his accessibility and his enthusiasm. Medlen’s path to drag racing wasn’t typical. As a high school rodeo champion and calf roping protégé to two-time PRCA World Champion Jerold Camarillo, he was planning to join Camarillo’s team when his dad, John Medlen, called with the job he had always dreamed of: working alongside him at <a href="http://www.johnforceracing.com/">John Force Racing</a>.</div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner">After eight years as a JFR crew member, Eric got the chance of a lifetime: team owner John Force chose Eric to replace JFR driver Tony Pedregon, who left JFR to form a new team with his brother at the end of the 2003 season. According to JFR, Eric said at the time, “My dad was my hero growing up and I always dreamed that we’d wind up racing together, but I never dreamed that I’d be driving and he’d be the crew chief on the same car, especially at a place like John Force Racing.”</p>
<p>After just six seasons, Eric Medlen’s life was cut short in March of 2007 when he died from injuries sustained during a testing accident in Florida. The initial outpouring of grief after Eric’s death was quickly followed by a universal show of support that resulted in the creation of The Eric Medlen Project, the thrust of which was the design of a safer race car and the creation of a safer environment in which to compete.</p>

<p>John Force threw his complete support behind the project by opening a state-of-the-art machine shop at the team’s newly built 180,000-square-foot facility in Brownsburg, Indiana. Eric’s father, John Medlen, became project manager of the Eric Medlen Project and worked with Ford Motor Company, the NHRA, SFI, chassis builder Murf McKinney and a host of others in an unprecedented display of cooperation.</p>
<p>Ironically, John Force was the first driver to benefit from the initial changes that were made to the chassis as part of the Eric Medlen Project. Although Force broke bones in his hands and feet when he crashed at Ennis, Texas, in September of 2007, he had no serious head or neck injuries.</p>
<p>The improvements that made Force’s survival possible included a wider roll cage, extra padding within it, the switch from five-point to seven-point harnesses and a head-and-neck restraint system that limits side-to-side movement as well as front-to back.</p>
<p>Fast forward to 2016, and the Force American Made employs 24 out of JFR’s approximately 100 employees. The 7 machine shop employees operate the team’s 17 CNC machines, with the latest additions to the fleet being six Hurco CNC machines: a 3-axis <a href="https://stonemachinery.com/cnc-machine-tools/hurco-vmx30i/">VMX30i </a>, a 5-axis <a href="https://www.hurco.com/en-us/products/5-axis/Pages/5-Axis-Swivel-Head-Machining-Centers.aspx">VMX42SRTi</a>, a 3-axis<a href="https://stonemachinery.com/cnc-machine-tools/hurco-vmx6030i/"> VMX6030i</a>, <a href="https://stonemachinery.com/cnc-machine-tools/hurco-tmx8mysi/">TMX8MYSi </a>mill turn slant-bed lathe, and two <a href="https://www.hurco.com/Specifications/Pages/Machine-Data-Sheet.aspx?Model=TMM8i&amp;Company=HUS">TMM8i </a>slant-bed lathes with live tooling.</p>
<p>FAM manufactures tens of thousands of parts per year that range from small consumable parts to super chargers, engine blocks and cylinder heads. Approximately 90% are 7075 and 7050 aluminum and the other 10% are Titanium Grade 9 (6AL4V).</p>
<p>Dean &#8220;Guido&#8221; Antonelli, General Manager of Force American Made, said,</p>
<p>&#8220;When we evaluate machines to replace existing equipment, I am always looking to improve tolerances and spindle speed as well as expand the shop&#8217;s capabilities and find ways to increase efficiency. Our tolerances are in the ten-thousandths, which accuracy and repeatability are critical when it comes to the CNC machines we select.&#8221;</p>
<p>Antonelli said the Hurco CNC machines have outperformed his expectations Antonelli and Nic Barnes, the Machine Shop Supervisor, said the benefits they appreciate the most from the new Hurco CNC machines are the surface finish quality, fast rapids, rigidity accuracy, the robust technical specifications of the Hurco control, the swing-arm ATC design and tool capacity, and the productivity gains from adopting 5-sided machining for parts they used to manufacture on 3-axis machines.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re always looking to improve the quality and strength as well as the fit and finish of the parts we make. With the Hurcos, the finish is like jewelry. I don&#8217;t even have to polish the parts,&#8221; said Barnes.</p>
<p>The impressive surface finish quality is due to the motion control system Hurco invented. Named UltiMotion, the patented motion control system is software driven and consists of millions of algorithms working in the background to provide optimized look-ahead.</p>
<p>Available on all Hurco 3-axis and 5-axis mills, the user doesn&#8217;t have to do anything to make UltiMotion work. While the technology is complex, there is no setup or configuration required. In addition to delivering superb surface finishes, UltiMotion also reduces cycle time by up to 35%, and sometimes more, because it minimizes machine jerk and evaluates the part geometry to calculate the optimal lookahead (up to 10,000 blocks).</p>
<p>The team users MasterCAM to create the majority of its parts programs, which Barnes and Antonelli said is another advantage of selecting Hurco CNC machines. &#8220;We&#8217;ve always heard about the Hurco CNC control being really good at conversational programming, but what we&#8217;ve found is that it&#8217;s true when they say it is the most flexible control in the industry. It processes G-code better than any of the machines we&#8217;ve had in he past,&#8221; said Antonelli. The technical specifications of the Hurco control that eliminate the hassle the FAM shop experienced in the past with other controls include a 2.7 GHz Dual Core Processor, 4GB RAM Memory, and a 128 GB Solid State Hard Drive, and up to 4,000 bps processing speed.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a big deal,&#8221; Barnes said of the memory and speed with which the Hurco control loads part  programs. &#8220;We have a flywheel part with two operations that we separated into two parts programs because it would take 52 minutes just to load one operation before we got the Hurco. But now, with the Hurco control, it takes 10 seconds.&#8221; &#8220;And the memory is so great we can have multiple programs loaded instead of loading them one at a time,&#8221; said Barnes. &#8220;It just gives me peace of mind to know I can see the detail of what the tool is doing and know there aren&#8217;t any crashes. The display is really clear and offers different views on the DRO.&#8221;</div>

Founded in 1993 by Rick Williams, Qualitex has grown from a small shop to a company with over 20 employees and 30 machines housed in a 16,000 sq. ft. facility. The company is ISO 9001:2015 certified and holds ISO/ IEC 17025 accreditation.</p>

<p>Qualitex customers are some of the largest companies in the world and include Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 OEMs that serve primarily the automotive industry and orthopedic sector in the medical industry. These industries largely deal with tool steel and tight tolerances. Qualitex currently has nine Hurco CNC machines, with the latest purchase being a<span> </span><a href="https://www.hurco.com/Specifications/Pages/Machine-Data-Sheet.aspx?Model=VMX42SRTi&amp;Company=HUS">Hurco 5-axis VMX42SRTi</a><span> </span>that has taken Qualitex to<span> </span><em>“a whole new level,”</em><span> </span>according to owner Rick Williams.</p>

<p>Williams began his career path in high school at an automotive metal stamping facility running punch presses. After graduation, he transferred into the quality department where he learned customized programming and how to run CMMs. While attending college, Williams continued working and was promoted to quality engineer and eventually quality manager, overseeing a tool and die facility of over 80 employees. He worked directly with OEMs, such as Chrysler, GM, Toyota and Ford, on die runoffs and gauge programs. This led to Williams being responsible for all gauge quoting and design/build activities for the company.</p>
<p>Williams then ventured out and started his own CMM inspection/gauge and fixture company in 1993. When asked why he chose Hurco CNC machines when he started his new business, he identified three primary reasons:</p>

<p>While dealing with production demands and today’s shortage of expertise, Williams has noticed firsthand the difficulties many shops are having when it comes to hiring employees. For Qualitex, the<span> </span><span><a href="https://www.hurco.com/en-us/products/Pages/WinMax-our-cnc-control.aspx">Hurco WinMax control</a></span><span> </span>has been a key asset to closing the skills gap.<span> </span><em>“My operators and the people I have trained on Hurco CNC machines take to it right away,”</em><span> </span>he said.<span> </span><em>“Our onboarding time, as far as bringing in a new employee and getting them trained, is usually about a week to a week and a half. If they have any experience in programming whatsoever, they take to Hurco CNCs faster than any other piece of equipment I have ever bought. We have about 30 pieces of equipment and the Hurco machines seem to be the easiest for employees to learn.”</em></p>

<p>Williams attributes this quick learning curve to conversational programming, which Hurco invented in 1976. “Hurco makes it easy with conversational programming,” he said. </p>

<p><em>“You do not have to program everything in NC or need a CAD/CAM system to do it. Our biggest thing with Hurco is we can take things from engineering and go straight to the machine and in a few minutes we are up and running. We are not having to run it through a CAD/CAM system, we are not having to do the NC code and we can be up and running quickly.”</em></p>

<p>Ben Thompson, a CNC machinist at Qualitex, agrees that conversational programming on the Hurco control is a key advantage. He said, “I used to utilize a lot of<span> </span><span><a href="https://www.hurco.com/en-us/support/Pages/CAD-CAM-Information.aspx">CAD/CAM software</a></span><span> </span>where you have to edit G-code and M-code. With the conversational control on the Hurco CNC machines, you can go straight to a line and change what you are doing, such as the depth, speeds and feeds. It is all right there. You are not having to go back and get a programmer to fix what you are doing.”</p>

<p>Thompson further elaborated that the mirror image/rotate feature on the Hurco control has been most helpful:<span> </span><em>“We do a lot of rotating where the DXF comes out and we have to rotate the views; it is just a lot easier to do it right at the machine,”</em><span> </span>he said.</p>

<p>From a business perspective, Williams said Hurco provides the best ROI: “The greatest advantage I find in buying Hurco CNCs is the return on investment. They are an affordable machine and that is why I keep buying them. I can get them up and running and make money with them fast. With this competitive market, I can buy more Hurco CNCs for the money to fill the volume and the capacity that we need.”</p>

<p>While the fleet of Hurco CNC machines at Qualitex is comprised mostly of<span> </span><a href="https://www.hurco.com/Specifications/Pages/Machine-Data-Sheet.aspx?Model=VM10i&amp;Company=HUS">VM10i</a><span> </span>and<span> </span><a href="https://stonemachinery.com/cnc-machine-tools/hurco-vm20i/">VM20i</a><span> </span>3-axis mills, Williams recently graduated to 5-axis machining with Hurco and said it has taken his shop to an entirely new level. Not only has the 5-axis CNC eliminated set-ups with the ability to complete 5-sided machining on parts they typically would run on a 3- axis machine, but it has also allowed Qualitex to provide simultaneous 5-axis machining capabilities for complex parts.</p>

Our Hurco 5-axis CNC has taken us to a whole new level that at least in northeast Indiana is not there. We are going to fill that gap for our customers.”</p>
